One of a few deciduous native New Zealand plants with oval pale green leaves arranged in opposite clusters along bronze-reddish stems. Pale yellow flowers appear in clusters from October to December, transforming into fluffy seed. Naturally found in wetter conditions of mountain ranges with higher rain fall, as well as on margins of riparian and wetland sites. The plant provides a habitat for insects and supports many moth species.
